An impressive amount of work has gone into making this field what it is today. Starting off as a high country farm station, it was only in 1986 that due to the high risk from heavy snow it was decided to change the farm’s focus. Now, Mt. Lyford concentrates on making the most of its winter asset of excellent snow.

There is a good mix of terrain equally suiting skiers and snowboarders at a beginner, intermediate and advanced level. This is enhanced with a Wild Ride Terrain Park, which includes a range of rails, quarter pipes and kickers. Two new kickers and the R&R Sport Kaikoura Half Pipe being upsized are the latest additions to the area. Mt. Lyford provides the freestyle skiers and boarders the opportunity to master their park skills and show off some serious tricks and air.

The high-quality log cabin accommodation close to the mountain and the pristine alpine environment make staying, and skiing or boarding at this winter resort a great time.

After a hard day carving it up head down to the Mt. Lyford Lodge for a drink, delicious meal and spa, or drive to nearby Hanmer Springs Thermal Hot Pools and Spa for a relaxing soak.

Mt. Lyford Tips:

  1. Lyford Mountain hosts racing events for everyone, including a Masters series which is free entry and the challenger series which is returning for 2013
  2. Chains have to be carried by vehicles at all times and to be fitted when advised
  3. There is a shuttle service that runs from the snow resort back to the Mountain reserve and vice versa in the afternoon. It is not a free service and booking is essential
