Winter road conditions in New Zealand are generally very good, due to the fact that the snow level rarely falls to our main highways. However conditions can be frosty or icy in shaded areas, and some passes will required chains, or even be closed, in bad weather. It’s essential that you are well prepared for winter driving, and that you know the road conditions and any weather warnings before leaving home.

We’re pleased to offer road snowfall warnings this season, in association with MetService/NZ Govt as well as road hazards and closures as supplied by Transit NZ. Check them before you go, it might save a lot of hassle later.

General Road Warnings

North Island

  • Due To Extensive Flooding In The Wanganui, Manawatu And New Plymouth Regions, There Are Multiple Road Closures And Delays In The Area. Motorists Are Advised To Take Extra Care Or Avoid Travelling Where Possible.

South Island

  • Winter Driving Conditions Exist Over The South Island. Watch For Ice And Grit Particularly In Shaded Areas And On Bridge Decks. Carry Chains When Travelling The Alpine Passes.
  • Black Ice Warning For The Southland Area. Motorists Are Advised To Expect Winter Driving Conditions And To Take Extra Care Particularly In Shaded Areas. Allow Additional Time For Your Journey.
